I began throwing pots in 1993. While attending Mount Royal College in Calgary, I began taking recreational pottery classes. In the fall of 1995, I transferred schools to the University of Northern British Columbia, where I worked towards and completed a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology. The only downside was that being a very new school, they did not have an art department, and therefore, no pottery. Sooo...I had to take a break that lasted for 3.5 years. I finally got my degree with a major in wildlife biology, and returned home to Calgary in the spring of '99. As I did not have a great job, I was forced to put pottery off for a bit longer, until 2001, where I found Fairview Studios, owned and operated by Dave Settles. I have been potting there ever since. I n 2002 , I traveled to Ireland to take a 10 day salt firing workshop with Marcus O’Mahoney. I have attended the Red Deer College “Series” courses where I studied with Cathi Jefferson, a Potter based out of North Vancouver. In 2007, I attended “Surfacing”, the BC Potters Association’s Tri Annual Ceramics Symposium, where I was exposed to many other potters and their work. Wherever I travel, I always try to incorporate a little pottery. I work primarily in porcelain, porcelaineous stoneware or a mixture of both. I love throwing large porcelain bowls and platters, and I am addicted to making teapots. Lately, I have been experimenting with the combinations of studio and commercial glazes. I take the commercial glazes way out of their comfort zone and fire them up to cone 10 in a gas kiln. This leads to more fluidity, runs and drips that help to enhance the movement within each piece and creates depth within the glaze itself. |
