I enjoy making functional objects. Their tangible quality balances Modern preoccupation with ‘Virtual Reality’, and their use connects us somehow through the simple act of eating and drinking, as it is a time for people to enjoy, and often to share. Intrinsic to porcelain are subtle tactile and visual qualities such as its response to colour, pattern and texture. The clay medium is by its very nature, grounding, and my work reflection of personal observations and experience of the world around me. Inspired by nature, botanical and landscape themes both subjective, and abstracted are integral to what I design, and create. All work is wheel-thrown or hand-built and decorated while wet with stamps, found objects, and other decorative techniques. I use Plainsman Clays porcelain, and coloured slips. Glazes used are commercial colours, as well as those developed and hand-mixed in my studio. A ‘prairie’ girl, I was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, grew up in Calgary, Alberta, and often spent summers on my Grandparents farm near Hanna, Alberta. The wonderful open Alberta landscape and ‘living’ skies are part of who I am. A graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design, with a ceramic major, and a painting minor, and subsequently from the University of Calgary, a Bachelor of Education, I have worked as a teacher, as a Ceramic Instructor, and as a Studio Technician while maintaining a part-time studio practice, and bringing up a family. Continued development in my work as a Potter has been largely self-directed study, augmented by courses at Red Deer College, and in various workshops. In 2005, a Pottery Tour to England and Wales through Red Deer College was an enriching experience. I have made the transition to studio practice; having retired from a position as Ceramic Technician with the City of Calgary in March 2006. Cultural Education in the Clay Arts and a connection to community through teaching, and involvement with the Alberta Craft Council, the Alberta Potters Association, and the newly formed Calgary Clay Arts Association is also of strong continual interest. My work can be found in many private collections. I am currently represented by: The Alberta Crafts Council Gallery, Edmonton, AB |
